In plain words
To say, You bear the trident that sends out flame. To say, O Pure One, who mounted the bull with joy. To say, You drank the poison not to be drunk. To say, With your eye you burned Kāma. To say, O hero, who burned the three cities. To say, O God, who wrapped yourself in the elephant's hide. To say, O mighty one, who wear the snake. To say, You hold the skull bowl and the red fire. To say, You slew Death, who brings victory. To say, You cut down the body of Jalandhara. To say, One day you severed the head of Brahmā. To say, You trod on the proud demon with his sword. To say, You shattered the sacrifice of Dakṣa. To say, You wore the hide of the fierce tiger. To say, While the boar and the swan could not reach you and were bewildered, you grew until the sky lay beneath you. To say, You pressed down the fire-eyed dwarf who destroys the world of rich waters and devours its lives. To praise in you such glory, and such, countless crores of it, beyond thought, is the measure of the words of me whose mind wavers. It is not your measure, O greatness beyond measure. Even so, with the poor words of my own mouth I look to you. So take away my distress, and do not make me suffer. In the seven-storeyed mansions the rich clouds sleep, and banners of fine cloth flutter again and again, as though beating and tapping to wake them, and the clouds leave their sleep and move along the streets. O rich divine flame, who dwell in holy Marutu! O wondrous dancer, who pour out grace and give it! The wicked Buddhist threw a stone, and because he threw it thinking of you, grace did not fail even him.
Line by line
you have the trident weapon that sends out flame, and saying O Pure One who mounted the bull with joy, and saying you ate the poison not to be eaten, and saying with your eye you burned Kāma, and saying O hero who burned the three cities, and saying O God who wrapped on the elephant's hide, and saying O mighty one who wear the snake, and saying you hold the skull bowl and the red fire, and saying you slew Kālaṉ who brings victory, and saying you cut down the body of Jalandhara, and saying you severed Brahmā's head one day, and saying you trod on the proud sword-bearing demon, and saying you shattered Dakṣa's sacrifice, and saying you wore the hide of the fierce tiger, and saying the boar and the swan not reaching, bewildered, so the sky lay below, you grew, and saying the rich-watered world destroying, eating lives, the fire-eyed dwarf you pressed down, and saying such and such, countless crores of glory hard to conceive, to praise in you is the measure of the words of me of wavering mind; since it is so though it is not your measure, of greatness beyond measure, with poor words in my own mouth I look to you; therefore, me remove distress, not afflicting, in the seven-storeyed mansions, the rich clouds sleeping, as if beating and tapping to wake them, the banners of fine cloth flutter again and again, leaving their sleep, moving along the streets, O rich divine flame who dwell in holy Marutu, O wondrous dancer who pour out grace and give, the wicked Buddhist who threw with a stone because he threw thinking of you, even to him grace did not fail.
