In plain words

We read, we ponder, we hear the Nām spoken all through, and still the love that comes of itself never shows. How is iron to turn to gold if it never touches the *pāras*? Dev, the knot of doubt will not come undone. Lust, anger, māyā, pride and envy: these five have banded together and robbed me. *(refrain)* 'I am a great poet, I am high-born, I am a pandit, I am a jōgī, a sannyāsī.' 'I am learned, I am virtuous, I am a hero, I am open-handed.' That way of thinking never dies. Says Ravidās, not one of them understands; they have gone astray like men out of their wits. What holds me up is the Name of Nārāyaṇ: my life, my breath, my wealth. *pāras*, the stone whose touch turns iron to gold.
