Apālā

Apālā was a girl who found soma, the plant whose pressed juice is the holy drink offered to the gods, by the way as she went down to the water. She pressed it with her teeth and offered it to Indra, king of the gods, whom her hymn also calls Śakra and Śatakratu. She asked him to make three things grow, and he answered her and gave her a skin like the sun. Her short hymn in the Ṛgveda tells it, nearly all of it in her own words.
