Manu's Daughter

Svāyambhuva Manu, the son of Brahmā, the creator, ruled the earth with its seven seas from Brahmāvarta, and his queen was Śatarūpā. Their sons were Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, and among their daughters was Devahūti.

She was so lovely that once, when she was playing with a ball on the roof of the palace, her anklets ringing and her eyes following the ball, the gandharva Viśvāvasu, a musician of heaven, saw her from his sky chariot, lost his wits and fell out of it. When she was of age she was looking for a husband who would match her in years and character and good qualities, and she heard from Nārada of the sage Kardama, of his character and learning, his looks, his age and his virtues. She set her heart on him.
