Devahūti
The Ṛṣikās · Ṛṣis and Ṛṣikās
Manu's daughter and the sage Kardama's wife, who served him until her body grew thin, asked her son Kapila to free her from I and mine, and reached freedom by his teaching.
Devahūti was the daughter of Svāyambhuva Manu, the first king. She heard of the sage Kardama from Nārada, the divine sage, and chose him for her husband, and she served him in his hermitage until her body grew thin. He gave her a palace that flew through the sky, and nine daughters, and then the Lord himself was born to her as her son Kapila: Viṣṇu, the first Person, whose names are also Hari and Vāsudeva. When her husband had gone to the forest, she asked her son to free her from the bewilderment of I and mine, and he taught her. She followed his teaching to its end, and the place where she reached freedom has been called the Place of Attainment ever since.
