The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Aparokṣānubhūtiḥ

Verse 64

घटनाम्ना यथा पृथ्वी पटनाम्ना हि तन्तवः ।जगन्नाम्ना चिदाभाति ज्ञेयं तत्तदभावतः ॥ ६४ ॥

In plain words

Call clay a pot, and a pot is what you see; call threads a cloth, and a cloth is what you see. Call Consciousness 'the world', and the world is what you see. Take away each of those names, and Consciousness is what is known.

Close to the Sanskrit

Just as earth (appears) under the name 'pot', and threads indeed under the name 'cloth', so Consciousness shines forth under the name 'world'; it is to be known through the removal of each of those.
