The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Aparokṣānubhūtiḥ

Verse 75

In plain words

A tree appears upside down to someone because of the water it is reflected in. In exactly that way, a person sees bodyhood in the ātman — through contact with ignorance.

Close to the Sanskrit

Just as the inversion of a tree comes about from water for someone, in that same way one sees bodyhood in the Self, through connection with ignorance.
