The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Ātmabodhaḥ

Verse 17

In plain words

The body comes bound up in its sheaths, husk over husk, layer under layer. Thresh them with reasoning, blow after blow, and sift out the pure Self within — the way clean rice falls free of the chaff.

Close to the Sanskrit

The body, joined with sheaths that are like the husk and the rest — by the pounding of reasoning let one separate out the inner, pure Self, as one separates the rice grain.
