The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Ātmabodhaḥ

Verse 29

In plain words

The Ātman, alone, lights up the intellect and all that follows it — and the senses too. A lamp lights up the pots; the pots do not light the lamp. Your own Self is never lit up by those lifeless things.

Close to the Sanskrit

The Ātman alone illumines the intellect and the rest, and the senses too; like a lamp with pots and the rest, one's own Self is not illumined by those insentient ones.
