The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Advaitapañcaratnam

Verse 5

In plain words

I was never born. I never grew. I will never be destroyed. Birth, growth, decay — all such properties are said to belong to the body, and they are made of matter, every one of them. Being the doer, and everything that comes with it, does not belong to what is made of consciousness; it belongs to the ego, and only to the ego. And I am the Self. I am Śiva.

Close to the Sanskrit

I am not born, not grown, not destroyed; all the material attributes have been declared to be of the body. Agency and the rest do not belong to the one who is made of consciousness — they belong to the ego alone; for of me, the Self, I am Śiva.
