सोम्य हस्तमार्तभागावामेवैतस्य वेदि-ष्यावो न नावेतत्सर्जन इति ।तौ हो-त्क्रम्य मन्त्रयांचक्राते तौ ह यदूचतुःकर्म हैव तदूचतुरथ यत्प्रशशँसतुःकर्म हैव तत्प्रशशँसतुः पुण्यो वै पुण्ये-न कर्मणा भवति पापः पापेनेति ततो हजारत्कारव आर्तभाग उपरराम ॥ १३ ॥
In plain words
'Give me your hand, my friend Ārtabhāga — the two of us alone will settle this; it isn't something to decide out here, in front of everyone.' So the two of them stepped aside and talked it over. And whatever the two of them concluded came down to karma alone; whatever the two of them praised, it was karma alone they were praising: 'A good person becomes good through good action; a bad person becomes bad through bad action.' And with that, Ārtabhāga, son of Jaratkāru, fell silent.

'My friend, [give me your] hand, Ārtabhāga; we two alone shall determine this — it is not to be [decided] by us two in an assembly,' [he said]. The two of them, having withdrawn, conferred; and what the two of them said was karma alone that they said; and what the two of them praised was karma alone that they praised: 'The virtuous person becomes [virtuous] by virtuous action; the sinful [becomes sinful] by sinful [action].' Then Ārtabhāga, son of Jaratkāru, fell silent.
