किंदेवतोऽस्यां दक्षिणायां दिश्यसीतियमदेवत इति स यमः कस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितइति यज्ञ इति कस्मिन्नु यज्ञः प्रतिष्ठितइति दक्षिणायामिति कस्मिन्नु दक्षिणाप्रतिष्ठितेति श्रद्धायामिति यदा ह्येव श्र-द्धत्तेऽथ दक्षिणां ददाति श्रद्धायाग् ह्येवदक्षिणा प्रतिष्ठितेति कस्मिन्नु श्रद्धा प्र-तिष्ठितेति हृदय इति होवाच हृदयेनहि श्रद्धां जानाति हृदये ह्येव श्रद्धा प्र-तिष्ठिता भवतीत्येवमेवैतद्याज्ञवल्क्य ॥ ।

What god watches over you in the south? Yama, he says. And what holds Yama up? Sacrifice. What holds sacrifice up? The gift you give the priests. What holds the gift up? Faith — because you only give once you've come to trust; the gift stands on nothing but that trust. And what holds faith up? The heart, he says — because it's the heart that knows what faith even is; that's where faith finally comes to rest. Just so, Yajnavalkya, just so.
