In plain words
Om. Whoever truly knows what is eldest and what is best becomes the eldest and the best among his own. And that eldest, that best, is the breath of life itself. Know this, and you become the eldest and the best among your people — and even among those you only wished you could surpass, you find yourself standing first, simply by knowing this.
Close to the Sanskrit
Om. He who indeed knows the eldest and the best becomes the eldest and the best among his own people; the vital breath, verily, is the eldest and the best; the eldest and the best among his own people he also becomes, even among those whom he wishes to surpass, he who knows thus.
