In plain words
'...is he called?' — 'the Fierce One,' the question runs. And Prajāpati answered: 'Because, on his own strength alone, without ever pausing, he draws every world, every god, every being up out of himself — creates them, sends them forth, gives them somewhere to live — and just as surely gathers himself back up again.' 'Sing praise to the famous one, who keeps to his den, forever young, a wild thing — fearsome as a beast, this striker-down, this fierce one. Be gentle with the one who sings for you, Lion, now that you stand praised — turn your armies on someone else, not us.' That is why he is called the Fierce One. Now — why the Hero? Because on his own strength he brings every world, every god, every being that comes from him to rest, and lets them rest, even as, without a single pause, he keeps creating them, sending them out, giving them a home. Because a hero is born of him — able, highly skilled, holding the soma-stones ready, longing for the gods. That is why he is called the Hero. Now — why the Great Viṣṇu? Because he pervades every world and makes it pervaded through and through — the way oil works its way completely through a lump of sesame paste, woven into every thread of it, touching every part, utterly bound up with it; that is how he is pervaded, and how he pervades. Because nothing stands above him, nothing beyond him — he who has entered every world there is. 'Prajāpati, at one with his own creation, keeps company with the three lights; he is the sixteenfold one.' That is why he is called the Great Viṣṇu. Now — why the Blazing One? Because on his own strength, by his own fire, he blazes, sets ablaze, is set ablaze, kindles — through every world, every god, every being that comes from him: he is the one who drives all things onward, the greater driver still, the shining one, the one who lights everything, the one who glows; blazing, the blaze itself, burning, burning fiercely, burning through and through, radiant, radiance itself, splendid, splendor itself, and utterly gracious. That is why he is called the Blazing One. Now — why Facing Every Way? Because even with no eyes, no ears, none of the ordinary organs at all, he sees on every side, hears on every side, moves on every side, reaches out and takes hold on every side — he is everywhere at once, standing on every side. He alone, before anything else existed, is the one who became all this...

'...is called ugram (fierce)?' He, Prajāpati, said: 'Because by his own greatness he unceasingly draws up all worlds, all gods, all beings from himself, creates, releases, and causes [them] to dwell — he is drawn up, he is withdrawn.' 'Praise the renowned one who sits in the pit, the youth, the beast — as one fearsome, the striker, the fierce one. Be gracious to your praiser, O Lion, being praised; let your hosts cast down someone other than us.' Therefore is he called 'ugram'. Now why is he called 'vīram' (hero)? Because by his own greatness he brings all worlds, all gods, all beings from himself to cease, and causes [them] to cease, while unceasingly creating, releasing, and causing [them] to dwell. Since a hero — skilled in action, highly capable, equipped with the pressing-stones, devoted to the gods — is born [from him]. Therefore is he called 'vīram'. Now why is he called 'Mahāviṣṇu' (the great pervader)? He who pervades and causes to pervade all worlds — as oil pervades a lump of sesame-paste, woven through and through, reaching everywhere, interlinked — is [so] pervaded and causes [such] pervasion. Because there exists no other higher than him, who entered all the worlds. 'Prajāpati, in accord with his own offspring, attends upon the three lights; he is the sixteenfold one.' Therefore is he called 'Mahāviṣṇu'. Now why is he called 'jvalantam' (blazing)? He who, by his own greatness, by his own splendor, blazes, causes to blaze, is caused to blaze, and causes blazing, with respect to all worlds, all gods, all beings from himself: the impeller, the great impeller, the shining one, the illuminator, the one who shines; the blazing one, the blazer, the burner, the one who burns intensely, the one who burns thoroughly, the radiant one, the one who is radiant, the splendid one, the one who is resplendent, the auspicious one. Therefore is he called 'jvalantam'. Now why is he called 'sarvatomukham' (facing every way)? Because, though without sense-organs, he sees on every side, hears on every side, moves on every side, grasps on every side; going everywhere, he stands on every side. He, alone, from the very beginning, who became this...
