In plain words
And once more: when a vīṇā is played, you can't seize its scattered sounds one by one. But grasp the vīṇā itself, or the playing of it, and the sound is grasped whole.
Close to the Sanskrit
It is like this: as, of a vīṇā being played, one is not able to grasp the external sounds [separately]; but by the grasping of the vīṇā, or of the playing of the vīṇā, the sound is grasped.
