In plain words

Upakosala, of the lineage of Kamala, studied as a celibate pupil under Satyakāma, the son of Jabālā. For twelve full years he tended his teacher's sacred fires. Yet while Satyakāma routinely allowed all the other students to complete their studies and return home, he withheld that permission from Upakosala.
