विच्छ्रुतं ह्येव मे भगवद्दृशेभ्यस्तरति शोकमात्मविदिति सोऽहं भगवः शोचामि तं मा भगवान्छोकस्य पारं तारयत्विति तँ होवाच यद्वै किंचैतदध्यगीष्ठा नामैवैतत् ॥ ३ ॥
In plain words
I have truly heard from teachers like you that one who knows the Self transcends sorrow. Yet I, venerable sir, am sunk in sorrow. Do you, blessed sir, help me cross to the other side of this grief. To him the teacher said: All this that you have studied is merely a name.
Close to the Sanskrit
It has indeed been heard by me from those like you that the knower of the Self crosses grief. Such a one am I, O venerable one; I grieve. May the venerable one carry me across to the other side of grief. To him he said: Whatever indeed you have studied, this is merely a name.
