In plain words

Whatever that earth is, the Gāyatrī is indeed that very thing. What does this refer to? It refers to the physical body of the living person, which is an aggregate of cause and effect, because the body is earthy in its nature. How can the body be called Gāyatrī? The answer is given: Within this body are established the vital breaths, which are designated by the word 'bhūta'. Therefore, just like the earth which supports the elements, because the breaths—which are termed bhūtas—are anchored in it, the body is Gāyatrī. And precisely for this reason the breaths do not exceed the body.
