The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Mohamudgaraḥ

Verse 16

In plain words

A fire in front of him, the sun on his back, and all night his knees pulled up under his chin. His begging bowl is his own bare palm, his roof the underside of a tree — and still the noose of āśā will not let him go.

Close to the Sanskrit

In front, fire; at the back, the sun; at night, knees consigned to the chin; alms in the palm of the hand, dwelling at the foot of a tree — even so, the noose of desire does not let go.
