In plain words

O Sanatsujata, when Vidura declared that death does not exist and taught this to his disciples, both gods and demons sought to conquer death and attain immortality by practicing disciplined studentship, living in the presence of their teacher as Indra, Virocana, and others did. As the Chandogya Upanishad records, beginning with the words 'Both gods and demons perceived that truth,' they spent thirty-two years in residence.

Close to the Sanskrit

O Sanatsujata, since Vidura stated that death indeed does not exist and this was taught to disciples, gods and demons desiring non-death, the absence of death, and the attainment of immortality, practiced brahmacharya, and Indra, Virocana and others dwelt in the teacher's house. And it is heard in the Chandogya beginning with 'Both gods and demons perceived that' up to 'those two indeed for thirty-2 years...'
