न छन्दांस्येनं वृजिनात् अधर्मात् नास्तिकं पापकारिणम् अधीतवेदम् अधीतवेदा मायाविनं धर्मध्वजिनं मायया वर्तमानं मिथ्याचारिणं तारयन्ति न रक्षन्ति ।किं करिष्यन्तीति चेत्—यथा शकुन्ताः पक्षिणः जातपक्षाः नीडं स्वाश्रयं परित्यजन्ति, एवं छन्दांसि अन्तकाले मरणकाले एनं स्वाश्रयभूतं प्रजहन्ति परित्यजन्ति, न पुरुषार्थाय भवन्तीत्यर्थः ॥

Neither the Vedic meters nor sacred study can rescue from sin the unrighteous, atheistic wrongdoer, the hypocrite who wears righteousness as a mere banner while acting with deceit and falsehood. If you ask what happens, the answer is given: Just as fully fledged birds abandon the nest that once sheltered them, so too do the scriptures desert such a person at the hour of death, offering no aid toward ultimate liberation.

The sacred meters do not save this wicked, unrighteous, atheist, evil-doing person who has studied the Vedas, nor the deceitful person wearing the banner of righteousness, operating through illusion and engaging in false conduct. If you ask what they will do: just as birds, fully fledged, abandon their nest which was their refuge, similarly the meters at the time of death, at the time of dying, abandon him who had treated them as his refuge, forsaking him completely, and do not become aids to the supreme human goal.
