क्रोधादयो द्वादश यस्य तपसो दोषाः तथा नृशंसानि च सप्त हे राजन्, यस्य तपसो दोषाः; तथा ज्ञानादयो द्वादश च आततानाः विस्तीर्यमाणाः शास्त्रे वेदशास्त्रे ये विदिता गुणाः द्विजानां तानतान् गुणान् दोषांश्च वक्ष्यामीत्यभिप्रायः ॥

Anger and the eleven that follow it: these twelve are what ruin austerity. So too the seven cruelties — these, O king, are the faults of tapas. And knowledge with the eleven that follow it: these twelve are ātatānāḥ, spread out at length in the śāstra, that is, in the Veda, where the virtues of the twice-born stand recorded. Those virtues, one by one, and the faults with them — these I shall now declare. That is what the verse intends.
