अन्यतमे कृते दमस्य प्रतिकूलं कृतं भवेत् ।के ते? अनृतम् अयथार्थवचनम् ।पैशुनं परदूषणवचनम् ।तृष्णा विषयेप्सा ।प्रातिकूल्यं सर्वेषां प्रतिकूलता ।तमः अज्ञानम् ।अरतिः अयथालाभसंतुष्टिः ।अथवा, रतिः स्त्रीभोगेष्वभिरतिः ।लोकद्वेषः लोकानामुद्वेगाचरणम् ।अभिमानः सर्वेषामप्रणतिभावः ।विवादः जनकलहाचरणम् ।प्राणिपीडनं स्वदेहपूरणाय प्राणिहिंसनम् ।परिवादः समक्षे परदूषणाभिधानम् ।अतिवादः निरर्थकोऽतिप्रलापः ।परितापः वृथादुःखचिन्तनम् ।अक्षमा द्वन्द्वासहिष्णुता ।अधृतिः इन्द्रियार्थेषु चपलता ।असिद्धिः धर्मज्ञानवैराग्याणाम् ।पापकृत्यं प्रतिषिद्धाचरणम् ।हिंसा अविहितहिंसा ।इति इत्थं दमदोषाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।एतैः अनृतादिभिः दोषैः विमुक्तो यो गुणः सः दम इति उच्यते सद्भिः ॥

When any one of these faults is committed, self-control is compromised. What are they? Untruth is speaking falsely. Malice is finding fault in others. Craving is the hunger for objects. Hostility is standing against everyone. Darkness is inner blindness. Discontent is unhappiness with what comes; or else, indulgence in sensory pleasures. World-hatred is acting to disturb people. Arrogance is withholding respect from all. Dispute is starting arguments. Tormenting creatures is harming life to feed one's own body. Slander is openly reviling others. Harsh speech is empty prattle. Anguish is brooding uselessly over grief. Intolerance is inability to bear dualities. Fickleness is instability among the senses. Failure is the loss of virtue, wisdom, and dispassion. Sinful action is doing what is forbidden. Violence is unlawful harm. Thus are the flaws of self-control detailed. That virtue which stands free from all these faults is declared by the wise to be true self-control.

If any one of these is committed, a violation of self-control is brought about. What are they? Untruth is speaking words not conforming to reality. Malice is fault-finding in others. Craving is desire for objects. Hostility is opposition toward all. Darkness is lack of true awareness. Discontent is unhappiness with whatever is gained; alternatively, delight is indulgence in sensual pleasures with women. World-hatred is acting in ways that disturb people. Arrogance is refusing respect toward anyone. Dispute is engaging in public brawls. Living-being torment is harming animals to nourish one's own flesh. Censure is speaking disparagingly of others openly. Harsh speech is meaningless excessive prattle. Anguish is dwelling uselessly on depressing thoughts. Intolerance is inability to endure dualities. Steadlessness is fickleness among sense-objects. Failure is failing in righteousness, knowledge, and dispassion. Sinful action is engaging in acts prohibited by scriptures. Violence is harming others outside scriptural sanction. Thus in this manner the defects of self-control are proclaimed. Released from these defects beginning with untruth, that virtuous disposition is called self-control by the wise.
