In plain words

Filled with pride, one thinks, 'I am greater than all.' Some read the text as 'it is said.' Thus, a person who knows the four Vedas with the chronicles as the fifth is called a 'five-Veda' scholar. Similarly, others are four-Veda, three-Veda, two-Veda, or one-Veda scholars, some have no Rig-veda, and others have abandoned Vedic study altogether. Tell me, among all these men, who is truly the greatest—the one whom I may recognize through true knowledge as a true knower of Brahman.

Close to the Sanskrit

He thinks greatly: 'I am superior to everyone.' 'Is spoken' thus some read. A certain person with the Vedas having the chronicles as the fifth is called a five-Veda [knower], this is the meaning. And similarly others are four-Veda [knowers], three-Veda [knowers], others two-Veda [knowers], and one-Veda [knowers], and non-Rig [knowers], and others who have abandoned Rig and other Vedas, [and] others. Among these men, tell me who is the superior, the best, whom I know as a Brahmana through wisdom.
