यो वेदप्रतिपादनप्रकारं व्याचष्टे, तम् आख्यातारं विचक्षणं ब्राह्मणम् अभिजानामि ।ननु बाल्यं पाण्डित्यादिकं निर्विद्यावस्थितमेव ब्रूते ब्राह्मणम् ‘अथ ब्राह्मणः’ इति, कथमुच्यते

Whoever can lay out how the Veda establishes what it teaches — that person, the one who tells it and sees it clearly, I call a brāhmaṇa. But surely the śruti calls a man a brāhmaṇa only once he is done with childlikeness, done with learnedness, done with all of that and settled: 'then he is a brāhmaṇa.' So how can it be said —

Whoever explains the manner in which the Veda's teaching is established — him, the declarer, the discerning one, I acknowledge as a brāhmaṇa. But surely the text declares the brāhmaṇa to be one who stands established only after becoming indifferent to childlikeness, learnedness and the rest, in the words 'then he is a brāhmaṇa'; how then is it said —
