। ॥ ५०१ ॥
In plain words
This is that adhyāsa laid over the ātman, and it walks in behind false knowing — never ahead of it. Though it is as good as unreal, it still spins out the whole of saṃsāra: exactly the way a rope spins out a snake.
Close to the Sanskrit
That, this superimposition upon the Self, having false knowledge as its forerunner, though as good as unreal, spreads out saṃsāra, like the snake on the rope.
