The Self is truly the dearest to all breathing creatures. For its sake alone do things like wives, children, friends, homes, and wealth become dear, as well as all varied pursuits like trade, farming, protecting cattle, serving rulers, and healing.
Close to the Sanskrit
The Atman is indeed most dear to living beings, for whose sake wife, children, friends, house, wealth and other objects, and trade, farming, cow-tending, royal service, healing and manifold actions exist.
