In plain words
Like one struck blind, he sees nothing clearly, wandering on a path shunned by the wise at the urging of the foolish. Stumbling at every step, he plunges straight into a dark pit. The only eye-salve that cures this spiritual blindness is the renunciation of worldly excess.
Close to the Sanskrit
Like a blind man he sees nothing further with the eye, and walks on a path avoided by the wise, urged on by fools. Stumbling repeatedly at every step on that very path, he goes and falls into a dark well. The medicine to remove this blindness is indeed this poverty (of desires) as collyrium.
