In plain words
Never getting wealth hurts. Losing what you already had hurts twice as much. And seeing it drained away on what was never worth it — that hurts three times over, and even the learned are not spared.
Close to the Sanskrit
When the expenditure of wealth occurs, the sorrow is twofold compared with non-acquisition; and even greater than that, threefold, is the sorrow in wasteful expenditure — even of the learned.
