In plain words

The rain cloud that hides the radiant sun has no independent reality either before or after; it simply interposes itself to block the observer's vision, without touching the sun itself. Were it otherwise, how could clouds shine in the absence of sunlight? Similarly, the world obscures our perception, but it cannot touch the supreme, self-luminous reality that illuminates all.

Close to the Sanskrit

Neither before nor afterwards is the cloud that covers the bright sun truly existent apart; rather, standing between, it obscures the sight of the observer, not the sun's disc itself. If it were not so, how could a bank of clouds shine without the sun? In that same way, the universe obscures the vision, but not the supreme, self-luminous reality, which is its own illuminator.
