Sādhana pañcakaṃ

Verse 4

In plain words

Treat hunger as the illness it is. Every day, take your medicine: the food that comes as alms. Never beg for something tasty. Whatever destiny hands you, be content with that. Bear the cold, bear the heat, bear whatever comes. Don't spend a word in vain. Want audāsīnya — the freedom of sitting apart. And drop both of these together: the craving for people's pity, and hardness toward people.

Close to the Sanskrit

And let the disease of hunger be treated; every day let the medicine of alms-food be eaten; but let tasty food not be begged for; let there be contentment with what has been obtained by the force of destiny. Let cold, heat and the rest be endured; but let no word be uttered in vain; let indifference be sought after; let both pity from people and harshness toward them be cast off.
