Because its illuminating power never ceases, the Self remains the knower even in deep sleep, and remains changeless in waking. Only objects undergo modification—this is the settled truth of the sacred teachings.

Because of the non-loss of power [in] deep sleep, [there is] abiding as the knower; in waking, because of changelessness, but the modification belongs to the object of knowledge alone—where [one] knows, [this] is the view of scripture.
