In plain words
Darkness deludes the mind into taking one thing for another. Without discrimination, someone sees a rope where there is a snake — and a flood of trouble falls on the person who grasps it. Listen, my friend: this grasping at what is false is what bondage is.

In that which is not that thing, the notion of that thing arises for the person deluded by darkness; indeed, for want of discrimination, the notion of a rope appears in a snake. From that, a great host of misfortunes befalls the one who seizes it. So listen, O friend: this false grasping is indeed bondage.
