In plain words

The 'oneness' this teaching points to isn't the oneness of the words taken at face value. Taken literally, God and the individual soul are opposites — like a firefly set beside the sun, a servant beside a king, a well beside the ocean, a speck of dust beside Mount Meru. What's being pointed to is beneath the words, not spoken by them outright.

Close to the Sanskrit

The oneness of those two [Brahman and the Self] is declared with respect to their indicated sense, not their [directly] expressed sense — since [taken literally, Īśvara and jīva] possess mutually contradictory attributes — like [an equating of] firefly and sun, king and servant, well-water and ocean, atom and Mount Meru.
