The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Yogatārāvalī

Verse 11

In plain words

Let the haṭha manuals count out their thousand retentions — only kevala kumbhaka is held in regard here. In that highest retention the breath neither empties nor fills: neither the breathing that runs on its own nor the breathing you engineer is left.

Close to the Sanskrit

Let there be kumbhakas by the thousands in the haṭha systems; only the kevala kumbhaka is esteemed — that highest retention in which the two movements of prāṇa, exhalation and inhalation, named natural and modified, are not.
