Question and answer 39

In plain words

But if the soul really has forgotten itself, why does everyone still plainly experience 'I'?

The veil doesn't hide the soul completely — it only hides the fact that 'I am the Self', and puts the body forward as 'I' in its place. It never manages to hide your own being as 'I' from you; that much stays real and eternal, whatever else is covered over.

Word for word

If it is the case that the soul has forgotten itself, what then is the reason that the experience 'I' still arises for everyone?

The veiling does not conceal the soul entirely; it conceals only the natural fact that 'I am the Self', causing the body to appear as 'I' instead — it does not conceal, from oneself, one's own being as 'I', which is real and eternal.
