In plain words
Knowledge of the Self is the gift. He tells the conduct of one who has such a vow and such japa: The knowledge, the direct seeing, of the Self whose form is the consciousness described: that is his gift (dāna). For by it the full nature is given (dīyate); the difference of the universe is cut (dīyate); the nature of māyā is cleansed (dāyate); and the nature of Śiva, his own being, once gained, is guarded (dīyate). That is why it is so called. Or again, a gift is what is given: knowledge of the Self alone is what he gives to his disciples. As it is said: "By sight, or by touch, out of the wide ocean of becoming the lords of yogins, established in the conduct of the Kula, will carry across."
