In plain words

In the beginning this was the Self alone, one only. He desired, "Let me have a wife, that I may beget offspring; and let me have wealth, that I may do works." So much is desire; and even if one wished, one would not get more than this. Therefore even now a man who is alone desires, "Let me have a wife, that I may beget offspring; and let me have wealth, that I may do works." And so long as he does not obtain any one of these, he thinks himself incomplete. And this is his completeness: the mind is his self, speech his wife, the breath his offspring, the eye his human wealth (for with the eye he finds it), the ear his divine wealth (for with the ear he hears of it), and the body is his work, for with the body he does work. This sacrifice is fivefold; the animal is fivefold; the person is fivefold; all this is fivefold, whatever there is. He who knows this obtains all this.

In plain words

In the beginning, this universe was the Self alone. If the wise person is liberated from the animal-like bondage of duties, what compels this helpless individual to act within the sphere of worldly bondage, rather than resting in the freedom of knowledge? It is said that the deities protect—indeed, they protect only those who operate within their own ritual domain, lest unearned results occur or earned merit be lost, but not an ordinary person who lacks such qualification. Therefore, there must be an underlying force that drives the soul away from its true inner home into external pursuits.

The Self indeed was this in the beginning... If the knowing one is released from that animal state consisting of duty-bondage, by what is this one caused to act helplessly in the sphere of action-bondage, and not again in the domain of knowledge as the means of liberation? It was said that the gods protect—truly, they protect only those mounted on their own sphere of action, otherwise there would be the contingency of experiencing unearned results and losing earned ones, but not any ordinary person unmounted on special authority; therefore there must be that by which, being impelled, he helplessly becomes outward-turned from his own realm.

In plain words

Since the mind is the principal factor among all other cause-and-effect aggregates, the mind itself functions as the self—just as the householder is the true self of his family of four because they follow him. Thus, here too the mind is projected as the self in order to achieve completeness. Speech is the wife, because speech naturally follows the mind... Whoever thus realizes the self as this fivefold sacrifice attains the entire universe as his very own Self—he who possesses this direct knowledge.

For all other cause-and-effect aggregates, because the mind is predominant, the Self indeed is the Self—just as the master of the household is the Self of the tetrad of wives and others due to imitating that, so here too the mind is conceived as the self for the sake of completeness. Likewise speech is the wife, due to the commonality of speech following the mind... Whoever thus accomplishes the self as a fivefold sacrifice obtains all this universe as the Self—he who thus knows.
