In plain words
The earth is the householder's fire, the middle region the southern fire, and the sky the offering fire; and from that very source the three called Pavamāna, Pāvaka and Śuci are made manifest. By this his sacrifice is made manifest; for the digestive fire is a joining together of Pavamāna, Pāvaka and Śuci. Therefore fire is to be sacrificed to, to be piled up, to be praised and to be meditated upon. Taking the oblation, the sacrificer seeks to meditate upon the deity: "The bird of golden hue, established in the heart and in the sun, the diver, the swan, the bull of splendour — him we worship in this fire." And he ponders the meaning of the verse: "That choicest light of Savitṛ" — the splendour of it is to be meditated upon; he who, standing within the intellect, meditates here, follows the way of peace of mind and sets it in the Self alone. On this there are these verses. (1) As a fire without fuel dies down in its own source, so thought, when its movements are spent, dies down in its own source. (2) For a mind that has died down in its own source and desires the true, and is not deluded by the objects of sense, the deeds that follow upon the sway of works are untrue. (3) It is thought alone that is the round of birth and death; let a man cleanse it with effort. What a man thinks, that he becomes — this is the eternal secret. (4) For by the clearing of thought a man destroys works good and evil; and with his self made clear, abiding in the Self, he attains unfading joy. (5) If the thought of a creature were fixed on Brahman as it is fixed on the range of the senses, who would not be released from bondage? (6) Mind is declared to be of two kinds, pure and impure: impure through its contact with desire, pure when free of desire. (7) When a man has made his mind wholly still, free of torpor and of scattering, and it goes to the state of no-mind, then that is the highest state. (8) So long is the mind to be held in check in the heart, until it comes to its end. This is knowledge and this is release; all the rest is the spinning out of books. (9) The joy that comes to a thought cleansed of stain by concentration and set within the Self cannot be told in words; it is grasped then by the inner organ itself. (10) Water in water, fire in fire, space in space — one could not mark them out. He whose mind has so entered within is wholly released. (11) Mind alone is for men the cause of bondage and of release: clinging to objects, it is for bondage; free of objects, release is held to be. Therefore, for those who do not perform the fire offering, do not pile the fire, and do not meditate with knowledge, the calling to mind of the brahmin's station in the highest heaven is barred. Therefore fire is to be sacrificed to, to be piled up, to be praised and to be meditated upon.
