The appalam recipe
Five sheaths, and what grows in them

In plain words

In this field — the five sheaths, none of which is you — one crop grows. It is the conceit that says I. That is the black gram. Put it in the quern. The quern is the question: who am I? Turn the stone. I am not this. I am not this. Break the grain open and grind it to flour.

Word for word

The black gram which is the grain that is the conceit called ‘I’, growing in this field of the five sheaths which are not the Self — having broken and powdered it in the grinding-stone of the enquiry of knowledge that asks who am I, saying only I am not this.
