Verse 30

நானா ரெனமனமுண் ணாடியுள நண்ணவேநானா மவன்றலை நாணமுற நானானாத்தோன்றுமொன்று தானாகத் தோன்றினுநா னன்றுபொருள்பூன்றமது தானாம் பொருள்பொங்கித் தோன்றவே

நான் ஆர் என மனம் உள் நாடி உளம் நண்णவே நான் ஆம் அவன் தலை நாணம் உற நான் நானா தோன்றும் ஒன்று தானாக தோன்றினும் நான் அன்று பொருள் பூன்றம் அது தானாம் பொருள் பொங்கி தோன்றவே

In plain words

Ask it and mean it — who am I? — and send the mind in after the answer. It arrives at the Heart, and something almost comical happens. The one who was calling himself 'I' hangs his head. Not killed. Not argued down. Embarrassed, the way anyone is when they are caught claiming a name that was never theirs. And then, by itself, unbidden: I-I. The same two syllables, and nothing at all like the same thing. Don't mistake it for an arrival. Nothing appeared. Something stopped covering it — and it comes up the way milk rises in the pan, all at once and over the sides.

Word for word

When the mind seeks within, asking 'who am I?', and reaches the Heart, he who is 'I' hangs his head in shame, and the One appears of itself as 'I-I'. Though it appears, it is not the 'I'; it is the Reality, the fullness, the Self. The Reality welling up and appearing —
