In plain words

The little life that plays at being God, shouldering the weight of the world — look closely: it is the carved figure under the temple tower, straining to hold up what stands perfectly well without it. And when you are already riding in a cart built to carry great loads, if you keep your bundle on your head and ache under it, whose fault is that but your own?

Word for word

For the soul that is a counterfeit of the Lord to bear the earth's burden — that bearing is the grotesque figure that seems to hold up the temple tower; behold! When one travels in a cart that carries great loads, and does not place his baggage in the cart but keeps it on his head and so undergoes distress — whose is the fault?
