Waking, dreaming, sleeping — these belong to whoever takes himself to be the one passing through them. Beyond such a one lies that wakeful sleep which people have named the fourth. But since that fourth alone truly is, the three that seem to come and go were never there at all; and where there is no three, there is no fourth to count. So settle it quietly within yourself: what remains is beyond even the fourth.
