In plain words

The Blessed Lord said: From where has this dejection come upon you at such a critical moment? It is unworthy of a noble person, leads neither to heaven nor to honour, Arjuna.

Word for word

From where has this dejection come upon you in [this] crisis, not befitting the noble, not leading to heaven, causing disgrace, O Arjuna?

The commentators

Gītā Vāhini

In plain words

At this point Kṛṣṇa Paramātma used four words: 1. kaśmalam, 2. anāryajuṣṭam, 3. asvargyam, 4. akīrtikaram. Of these, "kaśmalam" indicates Ajñāna; "anāryajuṣṭam", the loss of the happiness of Īśvara's own nature; "asvargyam", the loss of ādhidaivika happiness; and "akīrtikaram", the loss of ādhibhautika happiness. Śrī Kṛṣṇa's words, which spur a man's courage and stir a kṣatriya's blood, had some effect on Arjuna. Under the rays of these words, the tamoguṇa that had hardened in Arjuna began to melt, little by little, and his rajoguṇa quickened a little. With that rājasic keenness, the moisture returns to Arjuna's mouth and he tries to speak. Then Arjuna asks Kṛṣṇa, "katham?" Reflect on this closely, and the aim of this word reveals a fine secret. What is it? That our Bhagavad Gītā teaches, not what is to be done, but how it is to be done. "katham" is to be understood as "in what way". Grasp this well. Note it above all. And not stopping there, Arjuna looked again at Kṛṣṇa Paramātma: "Madhusūdana! Listen to what I have to say."
