In plain words
But Sañjaya, who had divine sight, thought to himself: "Foolish king, what is this crazy joy of yours? When the Paramātma himself has taken the Pāṇḍavas' side, will these people's hopes bear fruit so easily?" And in his own heart he pondered the terrible picture that Arjuna's war would bring. As compassion seized him, Arjuna's eyes filled with tears. His gaze was caught in a whirlpool. He had sunk into a pitiable state such as no one had ever seen or heard of. Seeing this, Kṛṣṇa, the Paramātma, could not bear it; he could not keep from speaking. He took Arjuna's pulse carefully, to find the cause of this disease. In a moment Kṛṣṇa Paramātma knew that this disease of moha had spread through the gross, subtle and causal bodies. But he saw that the "compassion" that had seized and entered Arjuna was not real (had it been real, it would have belonged to the divine wealth); that such compassion would never have rejected God; and that it was "mamakāra" come wearing the burqa of "compassion". So Kṛṣṇa Paramātma set about rejecting it. Then comes the phrase "kṛpayā viṣṭam", one possessed by compassion.
