Verse 46

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The yogin is greater than tapasvins, greater even than those learned in the scriptures, and greater than karmis. Therefore become a yogin, Arjuna.

Word for word

The yogin [is] greater than the tapasvins, [and] held greater even than those of learning; and the yogin [is] greater than the doers of rites; therefore become a yogin, O Arjuna.

Bhagavadgītābhāṣyam

In plain words

Since this is how it stands, therefore —

The yogī stands above those who practise austerity. He stands above the knowers as well — and 'knowledge' here means mastery of what the scriptures mean, scholarship; above even those who have that. 'Held to be' means known to be; 'greater' means finest of all. And above the ritualists — the agnihotra and rites like it are the 'action' meant here — above those who perform them the yogī stands, the one marked out. Since that is how it stands: be a yogī, Arjuna.

Close to the Sanskrit

Since (it is) thus, therefore —

Than ascetics the yogī is greater; than the knowers also — 'knowledge' here is scholarly mastery of the purport of the scriptures — than those possessing that also, 'mataḥ' means 'known', 'adhikaḥ' means 'foremost'; thus. Than the ritualists — the agnihotra and the like is 'karma' — than those possessing that the yogī is greater, distinguished. Since it is so, therefore be a yogī, Arjuna.
