In plain words
But those who stand highest among people, whose deeds are meritorious —
"Fourfold" means of four types. The people who worship me — worship here means serve — are those of good deeds, that is, people whose past actions are meritorious, Arjuna. The afflicted: someone in the grip of affliction, overwhelmed and driven into straits by robbers, tigers, disease and the like. The inquirer: someone who wants to know the reality of the Lord. The seeker of wealth: someone whose desire is money. And the knower: one who knows the reality of Viṣṇu — O bull among the Bharatas.

“Arjuna! Your questions are very necessary indeed! People in the world are stumbling with just such doubts. Since you are their representative, your doubt is the doubt of the world. The removal of your doubt is My message! Listen: those in the world who wish to reach Me are of four kinds.
One kind are those constantly afflicted by sorrows connected with the body; such a one is called ‘ārta’. Next, those who burn with longing for wealth and gold, possessions and vehicles, positions, name and fame, and for sons and grandsons to multiply, are the second group; these are called ‘arthārthī’. Then there are those who, wishing to know the Paramātma who is the Ātma-svarūpa, carry on inquiry through many good books, the company of sādhus, good thoughts and good feelings, and seek to gain the attainment of His presence; these are called ‘jijñāsus’. And the fourth is the ‘jñāni’. He remains immersed at all times in the tattva of Brahman.”
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 13 · Passage 8
In plain words
The doers of good, on the other hand, live constantly with good qualities, good thoughts and contemplation of the Lord of all, and, drawn to God, they yearn for Him. Such people may be ārtas; they may be arthārthīs; they may be jijñāsus. It is the meritorious karma of birth after birth that gives them such natures. The doers of good are those who, carried by their saṃskāras, have practised only meritorious karma in this birth as well. But the Gītā does not accept sakāma karma. It offers niṣkāma karma alone, without the least hesitation.
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 13 · Passage 11
In plain words
Of these four kinds of devotees, the ārta, the arthārthī, the jijñāsu and the jñāni, the first three, the ārta, the arthārthī and the jijñāsu, think of God as remote from them and pray to Him. The jñāni, however, is not so: he knows God directly, as the very form of his own Ātma, and serves Him. Such a one abides always established in God. Those of the first three paths named above use God as a means of gaining what each of them wishes for.
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 13 · Passage 15
In plain words
The jñāni is beyond Māyā and free of the guṇas. The jijñāsu is not so: giving no room to any other expectation, he spends his time constantly in thoughts of God, in good conduct and in good thoughts. Then the arthārthī and the ārta, step by step, inquire into the matter and, through sādhana and faith, turn into jijñāsus; and by that way they are able to reach Jñāna. Taking refuge in it, they cross over.
