"All this while you have held to Satya without swerving, and you have suffered many hardships. You even lived through every condition and term they laid down. And finally the attempts at a settlement: there is no need to speak of them separately. We waited as long as we had to wait. It was all in vain. There is no other way to open the eyes of that Duryodhana, a man of wicked ways, wicked arrogance and wicked conduct, except this one war. This is not a resolve made today. Before this, the elders all met, weighed every matter, and decided that war could not be avoided. Your brothers and you agreed to it and gave your word that it was right. From that day on, you have all been making every preparation the war required, and you too were immersed in it. Now that you are ready for battle, what is this cowardice that makes you step back today? This war has not fallen on you out of nowhere! You have been gathering what it needs for a long time! In those days you lived on raw fruits and leaves, pleased the Lord of Kailāsa, and won the Pāśupata missile. You went to the world of Devendra, were heaped with praise there, and earned the divine missiles. The dwelling in the forest is over. The time of living unrecognised has gone by. You thought the Kauravas' sin was ripe. The drum of dawn has sounded for the night of your misfortune. So what is this misfortune that has seized you now? This wretchedness: by what śāstra is it right? Yours is the kṣatriya race, whose life-breath is dharma. You have heroism, courage and valour in full strength; from which side has this forlorn Vairāgya come to you? Brother-in-law! This cowardly behaviour is an endless disgrace, not to you alone but to all the noble men who were your forebears. Shame! Enough! Enough! This shameless cowardice is a stain on every kṣatriya. For a kṣatriya, war is the royal road; for the kṣatriya race it is, in truth, the path to heaven. If at this moment you refuse to fight at all, you will fall into infamy. The wealth you earned yourself is your title 'Vijaya'. Will you throw into the dust the fame you won by pouring out your whole life? Cast off that petty filth of moha, brother-in-law! Listen to me. Remember what happened at Amarāvatī."
