Passage 18

In plain words

“Being born, existing, growing, changing, declining and perishing: these six are called the ṣaḍbhāvavikāras. Coming to be afterwards, having not been before, is called birth. Being, and then ceasing to be, is called death. Birth belongs only to what has parts, not to what is partless. The Ātma is partless, is it not? Then where is birth for the Ātma? And how can death come to that which has no such birth at all? Whom does such an Ātma kill? Whom does it cause to be killed? It is unborn, eternal, everlasting. Just as a man casts off soiled and worn-out garments and puts on new, clean ones, so the embodied one leaves worn-out bodies and puts on new bodies. What the garment is to the body, the body is to the embodied one. Had you known in its tattva this Ātma, the witness of bodies, you would not have been grieving like this. All your weapons can strike these bodies, these inert things, but they can in no way come near the changeless Ātma. Know this truth, and give up your grief over the body.”
