Though in matters concerning God the chief place is given to 'citta-śuddhi', for the ordering of governance the 'varṇa system', these binding regulations, are essential. However much it is hated and cast aside as useless, it is not a thing that will go away. Since the welfare of the world is the chief concern for all, it is very good that scholars and rulers, without haste, conduct an enquiry and bring it into order. Merely because some envious people have stirred up baseless abuse against varṇa, it is not the just course for intelligent and educated people to lend strength to it too. To say there is no varṇa is itself a varṇa, and to say there is no religion is itself a religion, is it not! What a wonder that, without considering even this small point, even those who know everything are becoming devoid of Viveka in this matter! Each and every thing has its own limit. If things overstep the limit appointed for them, that very thing is destroyed. The oneness of svabhāva and svarūpa is the truth of a thing. Otherwise, if only the svarūpa is there and the svabhāva is absent, it cannot become an eternal thing, can it! In the same way, if each group has no limits, namely its svabhāva, what group will it be? It will be a Triśaṅku's heaven. While great souls have guarded from generation to generation the limits God appointed for the protection of the world, today, in this Kali age, those of excessive cleverness treat it as a useless thing. One must not look at it without enquiry, without using Viveka, with outward vision and a vyaṣṭi outlook. If it is examined with the samaṣṭi outlook, with inner vision, with Viveka and enquiry, its sacredness will surely rise to the surface. Just as the butter that pervades all the milk, when churned by the right method, comes up separately and floats to the top, so the fine sacredness present in all four varṇas becomes clear if enquiry is made with Viveka-Buddhi. The distortions will pass. The matter will come clear.
